Viewing Days

“How long have I been staring at this whale?”, he suddenly wondered. He became aware of the claustrophobic space, the cold tiles pressing through the thin mattress against his sit bones. The answer was hours. And not for the first time. It was as if the humpback whale on the wall hypnotized him. Time and again, he lost himself in resemblances the poster enclosed. He saw a misunderstood beast, a squat stature, an old lumpy head, a limited sense of smell, a not too picky diet – mercilessly, he saw himself.
