By peeling off each layer of material, the artist also peels off a layer of time in which he performed a painterly gesture. The final outcome reinstates then the memories attached to those acts, and asks the viewers to interpret the traces that were left behind. It makes Stamkopoulos’ paintings physical witnesses of the invisible past, or “history defaced, some remnants of history which have casually escaped the shipwreck of time.”
